In a process for thermally cracking hydrocarbons to obtain generally gaseous olefins, a procedure is proposed which permits naphthalene to be obtained as an additional product. For this purpose, pyrolysis heating oil is subjected to stripping and a naphthalene-rich fraction is obtained from the stripped constituents after cooling.
