The invention relates to a tensile strength testing system which is suitable, in particular, for reliable and cost-effective testing of the tensile strength of long (e.g. 10 m) optical fibres. For this purpose, a vertically arranged test piece is clamped between a lower measuring head, which is essentially stationary, and an upper clamping head fastened to a cable. The measuring length can be varied by varying the length of the cable.
