A folding apparatus by means of which the bag walls are pulled taut in the upper region and by means of which gussets are inserted, is equipped with folding knives (152) which move along the bag walls inside the bag and on both sides of which suction holes (170) are situated. The suction holes (170) on each side adjoin their own suction chambers (166, 167). As the folding knives pass along the side walls of the bag, there is suction from only one side of the folding knives, whereas there is suction from both sides of the knives before and while the knives are pulled out of the bag edges. By using the folding knives (152) for suction as well, the need for a special apparatus, which takes up space, for this purpose is avoided. <IMAGE>
