A pointing head (2) and a bevelling head (3) are arranged on a machine frame (1). To automate the machining operation, the following arrangements are provided: a) a gripping turret (15) for gripping one unmachined round post (4a) each in a first position and for swinging it round parallel to the axis into a defined second position as well as for ejecting an already machined round post (4) from the second position. b) coaxial alignment of pointing head (2) and bevelling head (3) in the second position, and c) at least one drive (23, 32) for producing continuous, axially parallel relative movements of pointing head (2) and bevelling head (3). <IMAGE>
