The steel has the compsn. (by wt.) max. 0.07(pref. 0.01-0.07)% C, 0.20% P, max. 0.005% S, 0.003-0.2% AL, max. 0.004(pref. 0.001- 0.004)% N, balance Fe. The steel may also contain (i) max. 4.0% total of one or more of Mo, Cu, Ni, Co and W, and/or (ii) max. 0.2% total of one or more of Nb, V, Ti, Zr, Ta and B, and/or (iii) max. 0.2% total of one or more of the rare earth elements(including Y), Ca, Mg, Te and Se. The steel has satisfactory weldability, high strength and a corrosion resistance which is much better than that of conventional corrosion resistant steels.
