An adjustable transformer is proposed which has a plurality of primary windings and at least one secondary winding. In this case, the individual primary windings are connected by electronic switches (which are connected in series with them) in the current zero crossover, by an electronic control unit which drives the switches. Each primary winding is connected in parallel with a further electronic switch, which is closed, and the primary winding short-circuited, when the respective switch which connects and disconnects the primary winding is open, and which is open when the respective switch which connects and disconnects the primary winding is closed. <IMAGE>
