The restraint device consists of a dimensionally stable shell (3) and is arranged on a frame (4), fitted onto the seat upholstery (2.1) of a vehicle seat (2), with free spacing above the seat upholstery (2.1) and is held, together with the frame (4) by means of a customary seat belt (5) assigned to the vehicle seat (2). The child is directed backwards here and lies with the longitudinal axis of its body essentially in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle and inclined upwards towards the horizontal. The seat belt (5) runs transversely over the shell (3) through belt receptacles (6) provided on both sides of the shell (3) and as a result determines a swivel axis (8) for the shell (3), which axis (8) lies above the centre of gravity of the system consisting of the shell (3) and the child. The frame (4) itself is additionally held securely on the seat upholstery (2.1) by the seat belt (5) and is movably connected to the shell (3) in a guide (11) running below the swivel axis (8) in such a way that the shell (3) can be rotated about a guide axis (12) which can be displaced in the guide (11) transversely to itself via the seat upholstery (2.1) and is parallel to the swivel axis (8). In the event of a head-on collision, the shell (3) can therefore move onto the frame (4) and be aligned in the direction of the arrow (13). <IMAGE>
