PURPOSE:Linear cores are formed and the cores are coated with clads on their surfaces to enable the production of optical fibers whose cross section shape and materials can be freely selected. CONSTITUTION:At first, linear cores 1 which transmit optical signals so that their cross section is freely selected, e.g., made hexagonal. Then, the core 1 is led into the metallization chamber 2 to form the clad on the surface of the core whereby an optical fiber 4 with a double-layer structure is obtaind. Whens a plurality of optical fibers are united into a bundle 5, the six faces 4a-4f of each optical fiber closely contact with the adjacent surfaces with scarce gap between them to effect great increase in transmission efficiency. |
