In a process for the denitration of exhaust gases, in particular flue gases from furnaces, in which the flue gas stream is conducted through a bed of particulate catalyst material introduced into a reaction chamber it is proposed, to improve the provision of catalyst material in the reaction chamber, that the reaction chamber (2) is charged from above (11) with catalyst particles with the formation of a packed bed (3) in the reaction chamber and the catalyst material is withdrawn from the reaction chamber at the bottom (8) and the exhaust gas stream is conducted through the reaction chamber essentially transversely (1, 4, 5, 6) to the direction of transport of the catalyst particles. A forced distribution of the catalyst particles over the bed cross-section is preferably carried out in the reaction chamber by internals. <IMAGE>
