In a process for preparing and isolating a transformation vector which contains CSF/cDNA, - RNA is prepared from a cell which forms CSF, - polyadenylated messenger RNA is prepared from this RNA, - single-stranded cDNA is prepared from the messenger RNA, - the single-stranded cDNA is converted into double- stranded cDNA, - the double-stranded cDNA is inserted into a transformation vector, and bacteria are transformed with this vector, with the formation of colonies, pools of 200-500 colonies each are removed and plasmid DNA is isolated from each pool, - the plasmid DNA is transfected into appropriate host cells for expressing CSF protein, - the transfected cells are cultured and the supernatant is analysed for CSF activity, and - CSF-positive pools are selected and the colonies which were used for making up the pool are screened in order to identify a colony which possesses CSF activity. The CSF proteins can be used for treating an infection or granulocytopenia, or for activating neutrophils. <IMAGE>
