The control valve for mounting in a vehicle exhaust pipe acts as an exhaust brake. It has a housing through which the gas flows and contains a sealing disc slid by a drive mechanism. The drive mechanism comprises a lever (6) pivoting in the housing clear of the path of the exhaust, and on which the disc (2) is mounted. The housing can have a guide chamber (9) extending for at least double the length of the disc, and can be split, its thickness in the axial direction at the chamber being such as to accommodate the disc.
