Process for producing flat yarn

To produce flat yarn from polyester or polyamide, the multifilament yarns leaving the spinning zone have applied to them a liquid in an amount which exceeds the internal absorption capacity of the filament bundle and will provide the yarn with a coating of liquid on its outer surface too. The liquid used is in particular water, optionally containing small additaments, such as wetting agents, in amounts of more than 20% of the yarn weight. The yarns are hauled in the impregnated state at a minimum speed of 1000 m/min over a plurality of braking surfaces by means of a godet system whose surface speed is more than 3500 m/min, and undergo drawing in the course of that process. Upstream or downstream of the godet system the yarns are provided with a spin finish. The godets can be heated, in particular to contact temperatures with the yarns of about 100 DEG C in the case of polyamide and about 140 DEG C in the case of polyester.
