An apparatus and a method for removing gas from cans or similar containers, in particular for measuring oxygen in foodstuffs with protective-gas packing, having a movable needle or a suitable puncturing device, are intended to make it possible to eliminate the poor handling of the removal procedures hitherto used; a very small dead volume is to be achieved, the needle is to be easy to operate and the apparatus as a whole is to be simple to operate, with susceptible seals being avoided. For this purpose, it is proposed to surround the needle (70) with a suction cup (74) and to prevent leaks with a seal (61) which forms the boundary of a movement chamber for the needle (70), which chamber is provided with a terminating capillary (77) or the like and sealed up to the rim (75) of the suction cup (74). The needle (70) preferably passes through said suction cup (74) with clearance and is guided in a bore or the like. Moreover, the suction cup (74) is preferably surrounded by a flexible envelope (80) which is placed by means of a seating edge (84) on a container and then makes a vacuum possible around the suction cup (74). The suction cup (74) is placed on the container and a volume is applied to the movement chamber, after which the free needle end is forced out of this evacuated movement chamber into the container and the gas is fed to the analyzer. <IMAGE>
