6-[2-lSubstituted-pyrrol-1-yl)alkyl]pyran-2-ones of formula I
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="34" wi="57" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>and the corresponding ring-opened hydroxy-acids derived therefrom are potent inhibitors of the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutarylcoenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase), and are thus useful hypolipidemic and hypocholesterolemic agents. Pharmaceutical compositions containing such compounds. and a method of preparing the compounds are also disclosed.
