<p>A holddown bar for a hatch cover of a railroad car or the like and method of making the same as well as a railroad car utilizing such a holddown bar are provided herein. The holddown bar has opposed ends, one of which is adapted to be pivotally mounted to the car, and the other of which is adapted to be releasably latched to the car. A medial portion thereof intermediate the opposed ends is adapted to extend across the hatch cover and carries a sealing gasket in a channel thereof that is adapted to engage against the hatch cover. The channel is defined by a surface of the holddown bar. The gasket is secured to the surface by adhesive disposed between the surface and the gasket. An interlocking member is carried by the holddown bar and has a first part thereof mechanically interlocked to the holddown bar and a second part thereof mechanically interlocked to the adhesive, thereby mechanically to interlock the adhesive to the holddown bar. Thus, the interlocking member can be carried by the holddown bar to interlock the adhesive means in the channel means thereof to the holddown bar. This overcomes the problem of bonding the adhesive means to the surface means of the holddown bar as the adhesive means will only readily bond to the gasket means. The gasket means will remain secured in the channel means of the holddown bar of aspects of this invention.</p> |
