A resilient gasket has an interior hollow portion running along its elliptical length. An auxiliary resilience can be imparted to the gasket by positioning metal springs within the hollow interior, so as to respond resiliently to compression and decompression forces acting on the gasket. The springs are composed of two elongate curved strips which form an elliptical area between them. The auxiliary resilience can also be imparted by resilient ridges or beads positioned along the effective sealing surfaces of the gasket.
