Internal combustion engine with at least one camshaft driven by the crankshaft for the actuation of inlet and exhaust valves, each cam of the camshaft, whilst allowing for the respective valve clearance, by its shape determining the opening point and the closing point and the opening stroke of the associated valve, at least one cam of differing shape being immediately adjacent to the cam of the camshaft and it being possible to bring the associated valve into operational engagement with either of the two cams respectively by means of an adapter adjustable even during the rotation of the camshaft when traversing the cam base circle uniform in both cams.
