An optical recording medium comprises a naphthalocyanine dye represented by the following general formula:
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="39" wi="78" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>M means a metal, metal oxide or metal halide, and-OR<Sub>1</Sub>, -OR<Sub>2</Sub>, -OR<Sub>3</Sub> and -OR<Sub>4</Sub> are the same or different and denote ether groups respectively having R,, R<Sub>2</Sub>, R, and R<Sub>4</Sub> each of which is a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group having 4 - 12 carbon atoms. Such a dye is coated directly on a traneparent aubstrate without any Intervening reflecting inorganic layer being required, and writing and reading ia possible by means of light beams directed through the substrate at the dye coating.
