In order to produce sheet-like objects such as, for example, panels, signboards and plaques, housing parts and the like from strip-shaped profile elements consisting of metal, in particular of aluminium and its alloys, each profile element has, on one longitudinal edge, a tongue and, on its other longitudinal edge, a groove for fitting together a plurality of profile elements. In this arrangement, each longitudinal edge, provided with the tongue, of each profile element has a strip which is arranged at a distance from the tongue and to which a web strip can be connected, by means of which, via clamping surfaces, the assembly of groove and tongue in the joint region of adjacent profile elements is secured. In this arrangement, the groove is composed of an outer wall formed by an elongation continuing the sheet-like profile wall, and of an inner groove wall formed by an angled-off portion, the strip being configured as an angled-off portion which projects from the inner side of the profile element and behind which there engages the web strip by means of which the clamping surfaces are held against each other, with permanent deformation of said web strip. In order further to secure the connection, the strip and the groove wall each have a projection which is directed away from the joint, forms a receiving channel and behind which there engages in each case edge strips of the web strip spanning the joint.
