PURPOSE:To attain the compact design and low cost of a histogram generator by securing such circuit constitution where the density histogram of pictures is obtained without using a frame memory and at the same time to attain high-speed processing with a histogram generating circuit with no intervention of a CPU. CONSTITUTION:The picture (density) given from a camera 1 is subjected to A/D conversion 2 and an address 14 is prepared for a memory 8 for histogram (H) of density value 14, for example, corresponding to the density of said picture. Then the contents of the address 14 are read out and loaded on a preset counter 5 showing the histogram value corresponding to said density value 14. Then the counter 5 is counted up by 1 and the address contents are written to the memory 8. In this case, the memory 8 still has the address 14. Thus the data (density value) are counted for each data after A/D conversion. This operation is carried out for the entire part of a picture to obtain the density histogram of pictures.
