In order to group articles (1) to be packaged, especially pressure-sensitive articles which are moved against a stop (11) in at least one row extending in the conveying direction and are then conveyed onwards in grooves, the conveying speed is increased at a distance from the stop (11), which is at least equal to the length of the group to be formed, in such a way that the articles (1) are transferred from a first conveyor belt (3) to a second conveyor belt (8) running at a higher speed. When the number of articles retained by the stop (11) is sufficient to form a group, the slower conveyor belt (3) is extended at this speed towards the stop (11) and the second conveyor belt (8) is correspondingly shortened at the same speed. Once a gap has been formed between the group and the articles (1) following it, the first conveyor belt (3) is shorted to its original length, the articles (1) being transferred to the second conveyor belt (8) in the direction opposite the conveying direction and the second conveyor belt (8) is correspondingly lengthened at the same speed. <IMAGE>
