In order to set the gripping jaw movement, for example of an IR gripper, in accordance with a program, in order to grip components of different dimensions exactly and to be able to join them in confined conditions, the gripper transmission is driven by a stepping motor. The opening movement of the gripper jaws can be compared with a required value which is stored in the IR controller, by means of an actual value transmitter (for example a variable resistor) which is mounted in or between the gripper jaws. Start/stop and right/left movement commands are transmitted to the stepping motor controller via in each case one output from the IR controller. The high static torque of the stepping motor at rest applies the gripping force. <IMAGE>
