PURPOSE:To uniformly apply a coating material onto a steel strip with good control even if the steel strip is transversely cambered by first applying the coating material to one face of the steel strip and drying the coating then applying the coating material to the other face. CONSTITUTION:This invention relates to the application of the coating material on the steel strip to be subjected to the application and baking of a surface treating agent, in which the coating material is first applied on the top surface of the steel strip A, then the coating material is applied on the bottom surface. Then the application is executed by using back up rolls 20 and pinching the steel strip A by the cooperation of the back up rolls 20 and roll coaters 24 in the stage of coating the bottom surface. The coating material is thus applied on the steel strip while the transverse camber of the steel strip A is corrected. In addition, the control of the coated film thickness to the uniform coated film thickness in the transverse direction of the steel strip A is made possible.
