PURPOSE:To easily further surely detect a sheet material to be attracted, by swiveling movable members, provided protrudably and retractably on an attracting surface, by the sheet material and detecting the displacement of said movable member by a detecting element when the sheet material is attracted to the attracting surface of an attracting member. CONSTITUTION:If a suction fan 20 in an attracting head 10 is driven, a document is attracted to an attracting surface 26 by attractive force acting from a suction hole through a negative pressure chamber 21. Here movable members 34 are angularly displaced in directions C1, C2 about supporting axes 60 because the document lifts movable pieces 33 in an attraction detector 1. Then movable pieces 38 of the movable members 34 intrude into photointerrupters 30, shielding light from a light emitting element. As a result, a processing circuit, to which an output from a light receiving element is given, detects the document to be attracted to the attracting surface 26. In this way, a sheet material can be surely detected in high accuracy by simplified constitution, and a device can be formed in small size.
