PURPOSE:To obtain a compact and light-weight gear noise preventing device having a small number of components by providing a member of check means in form of a recess formed in an intermediate shaft between input and output gears and providing the other member of the check means in form of a pin or projection. CONSTITUTION:When an intermediate gear 17 is shifted to the right, the intermediate gear 17 is brought in engagement with an input shaft 4 to be rotated, but with no load, it is freely rotated, causing no gear noise. At this time, a sleeve 11 is pressed by a disc spring 22 to be moved to the right along with the gear 17 and a frame 18. When a pin 14 reaches a inclined check surface 8, movement of the sleeve 11 is restricted by the pin 14 and the inclined check surface 8, so that the disc spring 22 is compressed to bring friction surfaces 13, 20 of a brake 21 in contact with each other and thereby to apply braking force to the frame 18. The brake 21 generates the braking force due to tight contact between the friction surfaces 13, 20 caused by a component of the torque in the direction of the inclined check surface 8. Then, the intermediate gear 17 comes in smooth engagement with an output gear 5 synchronous therewith to complete shifting operation.
