<p>Satisfactory fracture splitting of light metal components is difficult because of the inherent ductility of the material which results in deformation of the metal during splitting. When such deformation occurs, the two halves of the fracture will not mate properly with each other. The invention provides for local hardening of a light metal component in the fracture region, and possible techniques proposed are forming the component around a brittle material insert (24), locally modifying the internal structure of the metal and casting a brittle wire armature (26) in the metal. All of these techniques are also likely to be accompanied by a stress raising notch (28) formed at the component surface.</p> |
