A method and an apparatus are used for chiplessly separating a treetrunk (10) into wood products. The treetrunk (10) is guided axially past at least one knife (50) which laterally splits off a wood product, preferably a sideboard (51), from the treetrunk (10). Seen in the feed direction of the treetrunk (10), a radial force is exerted on the surface of the treetrunk (10) in front of the knife (50). To prevent, as far as possible, damage to the split-off sideboard, the force can be adjusted during the splitting-off. <IMAGE>
