[Class 70] In a process for softening raw rubber and compositions thereof with the use of a rolling mill comprising two oppositely revolving rollers, the rubber being worked as an endless loop formed by feeding the forward end of the issuing sheet again to the rolls, the loop accumulates in superposed folds upon a support at the feed side of the mill as its length increases with continued working to the desired thinness, the rollers drawing continuously from the accumulation. A rubber batch is charged into the mill comprising rollers 1, 2, initially adjusted to give a continuous sheet of say one inch thickness. The spacing is gradually reduced and the lengthening sheet 11 led over rollers 6, 5, driven at the same peripheral speed as the rollers 1, 2, and back to the feed side of the machine where it accumulates upon the supports 9 which can be swung downwardly and inwardly into operative position. When a few folds have formed, the end of the sheet is fed to the rollers. The supports may consist of forks, cylindrical or conical rolls, either smooth or grooved, or serrated bars, lattice-work members, or hook or shovel shaped members disposed parallel, transversely or otherwise, to the rollers. Two or more machines may be used in series. |
