PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink composition and a production method of the ink composition including a near infrared ray-absorbing dye having low absorption in a visible light region, which less likely degrades a hue of an image, can suppress cockles of a recording medium such as a paper, and has excellent storage stability, and an image forming method.SOLUTION: The ink composition comprises a diimmonium salt compound represented by a specific structural formula as a near infrared ray-absorbing dye, a polymer dispersant that covers at least a part of the diimmonium salt compound, a colorant, and water, in which the content of the diimmonium salt compound is 0.001-0.9 mass% with respect to the whole mass of the ink composition; an acid value X mgKOH/g and a base value Y mgKOH/g of the polymer dispersant satisfy X-Y≥10; and a ratio of the content of the polymer dispersant to the content of the diimmonium salt compound is 0.05-1.2 on a mass basis.SELECTED DRAWING: None |
