The process according to the invention is a process for electrochemical reduction of organic compounds bearing at least one electroreducible group, used in a primary aliphatic amine or liquid ammonia medium in the presence of an inert electrolyte. The anode, made of zinc, aluminium or magnesium, is consumed during the electrochemical reduction. This process advantageously replaces reductions by alkali metals in an amine or ammonia medium ("Birch", "Bouveaux-blanc" or "Benkeser" reductions) by making it possible in particular to work in an uncompartmented cell; even in the case of compounds which are easily oxidisable or which carry an acidic proton, such as phenylglycine.
