In a control device for a drive assembly used to drive a motor vehicle, with an internal combustion engine and an automatic transmission connected on the output side, means operate to influence the transmission ratio as a function of an operating parameter which is uninfluenced by driving performance and fuel consumption. When a critical value of the operating parameter occurs, the said means produce an increase of the engine speed by adjusting the transmission ratio, set taking into account the engine torque, speed of travel etc. In order to allow the engine to operate with optimum consumption at low speeds but at the same time to supply auxiliary units, not associated with the engine, with sufficient drive energy when required, at least one, especially an additional operating parameter unrelated to the engine is used.
