The load conveying means (1) is connected to a counterweight (2) by way of a carrying means (3) that reverses at least once. The hydraulic drive motor (7, 8, 13) does not engage with this carrying means, but with a separate, flexible drive means (6). The latter is connected to the load conveying means (1) and/or the counterweight (3), and can be moved in both directions by the drive motor (7, 8, 13). It can be in two parts (23, 24). In addition, a speed-transforming gear can be provided. The hydraulic motor can be a rotary or at least a hydraulic linear motor. For this load conveying means, the hydraulic pump (38) is intended to be operated both in the upwards and in the downwards direction, due to the use of a counterweight. For this reason, the hydraulic pump (38) is reversible. In addition, its delivery rate is adjustable. Although the elevator cage is powered by the hydraulic pump (38) even in the downwards direction, the smallest drive losses of all hydraulic elevator drives known to date are achieved, due to the separation of carrying means and drive means, and thus the smallest drive motor is sufficient, and the best energy utilisation is achieved. Special hydraulic circuits ensure that the elevator cage (1) can be moved by hand. Special measures are required for this. <IMAGE>
