<p>An integral differential case (110) for a cross axis, compound planetary gear differential that includes end portions (110a), (110b) each defining an axle receiving bore (114), (128) and trunnions (112), (126) by which the case is rotatably supported within a housing, and, an intermediate portion (110c) located between the end portions. The intermediate portion includes a pair of spaced apart, aligned transfer gear windows (140) defined by side walls (152) and window wall sections (154) that each include inwardly projecting broached machined surfaces (154b) for coacting with transfer gears (172) rotatably carried within the window. The end portions define respective inwardly extending extensions (180), (182) having end faces for coating with axle drive gears located inside the differential case. The end faces are disposed in parallel planes which are substantially orthogonal to the planes of the broached window wall surfaces and which are located inwardly with respect to window side walls (152). The intermediate portion (110a) also defines elongate openings (156) spaced 90 degrees from thetransfer gear windows and recesses (158) between the windows and the elongate openings so that in section the intermediate portion appears to comprise four L-shaped posts (160). Each post includes aligned bores for receiving transfer gear shafts and bores (168) for receiving shaft retaining pins (174).</p> |
