PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer with a low electrolytic ion content at a low cost, by distilling a reaction mixture containing a polyarylene sulfide and alkali metal halide, adding a poor solvent for the polymer, separating solid and liquid, drying the resultant cake and washing the cake with water. CONSTITUTION:A polyhalo-substituted aromatic compound is reacted with an alkali metal sulfide containing water in a polar organic solvent to give a mixture consisting essentially of a polyarylene sulfide and alkali metal halide. After dehydrating by distillation, a solvent which is a poor solvent for the polyarylene sulfide and alkali metal halide and soluble in the polar organic solvent is added to separate the formed slurry consisting of the polyarylene sulfide and alkali metal halide into solid and liquid by a centrifuge 2. The resultant cake is then dried in a dryer 3 and water is further added to dissolve and wash the metal halide. Thereby the solid is separated from liquid to recover the aimed polyarylene sulfide.
