PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having high melting point and excellent thermoplastic moldability, etc., by carrying out polycondensation of a diphenyl ether compound with a terephthalophenone compound in the presence of an alkali in a specific solvent and stabilizing the terminals of the produced polymer. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer expressed by formula II and free from gel can be produced by dissolving (A) 4,4'-bis(p-hydroxybenzoyl)diphenyl ether produced e.g. by the Fries rearrangement of an aromatic diester of formula I and (B) 4,4'-difluoroterephthalophenone at a ratio (A:B) of preferably 100:105-105:100 in (C) an aromatic ketone (e.g. xanthone), addition (D) an alkali (e.g. sodium carbonate), reacting the components e.g. at 250-400 deg.C and adding (E) an active halogen compound (e.g. dichlorodiphenylsulfone) to the reaction product.
