PURPOSE:To ensure both favorable gradation properties and favorable resolution, by providing a plurality of threshold matrices used for a binary coding process. CONSTITUTION:As threshold matrices (binary coding matrices) used for a binary coding process, for example, Bayer-type matrices and spiral type matrices are provided. The Bayer-type, or dot dispersion type, of matrices are excellent in resolution, while the spiral type, or dot concentration type, of matrices are excellent in gradation properties. Therefore, image quality depends on the type of the threshold matrix used. For example, only when received data is a character code, the code is developed into a bit map, and a bit in a flag memory corresponding to the position of the character is set to '1'. The flag in the flag memory is referenced, and when the flag is set, the dot dispersion type of matrix excellent in resolution is selected for use. |
