In the production of cement clinker or similar calcined material in rotating tubular kilns with downstream-connected grid cooler, a portion of the cold air for the combustion in the rotating tube is customarily preheated in said grid cooler and a portion is led away as heated exhaust air. To stabilise such rotating tubular kilns and, with the desired clinker quality, to obtain a uniform kiln passage, the added heat streams of the exhaust air and of the emerging clinker are to be controlled with the grid advance, as a result of which, compared with the known control concepts, the cooler is no longer optimised alone but the entire system is taken into account. The grid advance can preferably regulate the exhaust air temperature so as to be constant.
