<p>A lighting unit, particularly for use at airports, which is intended to be inset in the ground in the vicinity of runways and taxiways. The lighting unit comprises a cover (48), a lamp housing (41) adapted to be inset in the ground, a lens unit (46), a lamp holder (44) and a reflector (45) positioned to substantially surround a lamp (43) located in the lamp holder. The reflector consists of two parts (50) and the lens unit (46) is disposed outside the reflector and has a pair of integrally formed lenses (46a) which are capable of transmitting light over a predetermined arc in two opposite directions. The reflector is provided with an aperture (49) for each lens (46a) arranged such that light rays from the lamp (43) are reflected by one portion (50) of the reflector through a said aperture (49) in an opposite portion of the reflector and hence through the associated lens (46a) for emission over the desired predetermined arc. The two parts (50) of the reflector are adjustable with respect to each other in order to vary the arc over which the light is emitted in the horizontal plane.</p> |
