The control valve has a valve housing with an inlet and an outlet branch and a valve spindle (1) which is guided in a sealed and axially displaceable manner in the said housing and has a valve element which interacts with a valve seat between the inlet and the outlet branch, is balanced on the inlet and outlet side and, at its end remote from the valve spindle, is provided with a balance piston (2). The balance piston (2) is guided in a sealed manner in an extension (3) of the valve housing, a first stuffing box packing (4) being inserted between them, this being held by an axially adjustable cup-shaped closing part (6) which fits over the outer end of the balance piston (2) to form a balance chamber (5), the balance chamber (5) being sealed off from the outside by a second stuffing box packing (10) separated from the first stuffing box packing (4). This second stuffing box packing (10) is arranged between the interengaging surfaces (6a, 3a) of the closure part (6) and the extension (3) and between contact surfaces (11, 12) lying in series in the axial direction of the balance piston. <IMAGE>
