An electronic key contains an integrated circuit (9) with a memory in a housing (6), in which memory a character can be stored which is assigned to a predetermined lock and, when the key is inserted into the lock, it is compared with a character which is stored in the lock. If the characters correspond, the lock is unlocked. The key housing has mutually insulated contacts (1, 2, 3), two (1, 3) of which are connected to operating voltage inputs (12, 13) of the integrated circuit (9), and one (2) is connected to a data transmission connection (10) of the integrated circuit (9). In order to avoid contact difficulties, the key housing has only three contacts (1, 2, 3), it being possible to transmit the data of a character in serial form through the data transmission connection (10) of the integrated circuit (9), and one contact (1) is connected directly to a clock input (11) of the integrated circuit (9), and via a diode (15) to one operating voltage input (12) and to one side of the capacitor (16), whose other side is connected to the other operating voltage input (13) of the integrated circuit (9). <IMAGE>
