A two stage electrostatic precipitator includes a charging unit for mainly charging dust and a dust collecting unit for mainly collecting dust, which changing unit includes discharging electrodes having a substantially uniform cross section to which is applied a high voltage pulse superimposed on a DC high voltage and dust collecting electrodes, and the dust collecting unit includes discharging electrodes and also dust collecting electrodes. The discharging electrodes of the charging unit are disposed at an equidistance from each apex of a polygon formed by the centres of the dust collecting electrodes.
