The invention relates to a method and a circuit for controlling a hydraulic actuator, for example a hydraulic cylinder having a valve (3) whose switching position is altered by DC control voltages. According to the invention, the DC voltage is supplied to the electromagnets (4, 5) of the valve via two conductors (1, 2) one of which is in each case live, whereas the other is free of voltage, or both are simultaneously free of voltage. The polarity of the conductors (1, 2) defines the direction of motion of the hydraulic actuator. A positional measurement sensor and comparator and switching elements (IC1, IC2) are provided, in order to open and close the circuit flowing through the electromagnets (4, 5) for controlling the motion of the hydraulic actuator, and to inform the control centre about the voltage across the outputs of the comparator and switching elements. <IMAGE>
