Waterbox for a tubular heat exchanger for engine cooling or passenger compartment heating in motor vehicles which are equipped with internal-combustion engines, and a method for mounting and sealing the heat exchanger tubes in the base part of the waterbox. In order to avoid difficulties in mounting and sealing the heat exchanger tubes in a metal baseplate, and to achieve satisfactory metal sealing and mounting of the tubes, the baseplate is designed as a trough which has a circumferential step in the sidewalls. A solder based on zinc and aluminium is introduced into the trough floor in liquid or solid form, and is liquified after being introduced. The solder is joined by means of a special ultrasonic soldering process to the inside of the trough and to the tube ends projecting into the trough. <IMAGE>
