A pair of magnetic transducer heads are disposed opposite to each other, normally with a spacing therebetween, for data transfer contact with the opposite faces of the magnetic disc. Also mounted on the base structure is a cartridge cradle movable between a first position, where the disc cartridge is to be loaded on and unloaded from the cartridge cradle, and a second position where the loaded disc cartridge engages with the drive hub of the disc drive mechanism to be driven by it. The movement of the cartridge cradle between the two positions is effected by a cradle transport mechanism including a resilient device acting to bias the cartridge cradle from the 1'st toward 2'nd position.
