2-Imidazol-2-yl quinoxalines of formula (I) and their salts, with antagonistic activity to alpha-adrenergic receptors, esp. the alpha-2 type, are made by reacting an imidate of formula (II) with an amine of formula (III). The imidates (II) are obtd. by addn. of an alcohol to nitriles of formula (IV) catalysed by the corresp. alkoxide or HCl.
