The device allows each optical fibre core in the multi core optical fibre to be coupled to a corresp. single core optical fibre. It comprises a series of optical cores enclosed by an outer sheath, each core having a diameter at one end corresp. to that of the optical fibre cores in the multi core fibre and a diameter at the opposite end corresp. to the core dia. of the corresp. signal core fibre. The first ends of these cores are grouped in the same configuration as the cores of the multi-core fibre and the opposite ends are spaced apart by a distance slightly larger than the diameter of the mantle dia. of each single core fibre.
