The invention relates to an apparatus with which transverse galleries (5) starting from a tunnel (1) are driven to a parallel tunnel or another service tube or the like. The apparatus has a driving unit (7) which is movable in the tunnel on a transport frame (8). The transport frame (8) is provided with a guiding and starting structure which preferably consists of a tubular body (10) which accommodates the entire driving unit (7). The driving unit (7) comprises the driving machine (14) with driven cutting head (15), a bracing device which preferably consists of two bracing frames or the like connected via shifting cylinders and forming a walking mechanism, and conveniently also a conveying device (20). The entire driving unit can be guided from its transport position on the transport frame (8) through an opening (42) in the tunnel lining (2) in the driving direction of the transverse gallery (5), in the course of which it is guided by the tubular body (10), and the tubular body can at the same time serve as a support for the shifting cylinders of the driving machine.
