Engineering arrangement for the biodegradation of chlorinated organic solvents

The process relates to the disposal of waters polluted with chlorinated hydrocarbon-based solvents, so-called contact waters. In the first process stage, the solvents are removed from the contaminated water by a stripping process and thus separated off from other non-volatile accompanying substances possibly interfering with the biodegradation. In the second process stage, the expelled solvents are added to the gas-introduction stream of a biologically active fixed-bed filter, to which gas is introduced from below and which is adapted to the biodegradation of chlorinated hydrocarbons. As a result of the adsorption characteristics of the fixed bed, the chlorinated hydrocarbons are removed from the gas stream and made available for biodegradation. The biodegradation itself proceeds as cometabolism with addition of a nutrient solution containing an easily utilisable carbon source and with an oxygen minimization and leads to mineralisation of the organically bound chlorine to form chloride. <IMAGE>
