A method is disclosed for forming a polycrystalline thin film on a transparent substrate based on the spraying of a suitable precursor solution onto the substrate and heating the substrate to evaporate the precursor solvent on the substrate. In the invention, the droplets of precursor solution are electrostatically charged and are electrostatically attracted to the surface of the substrate. Furthermore the droplets impinging on the surface of the substrate are heated by radiant energy incident upon the surface of the substrate from the opposite side from the spray.
