A food slicing machine is provided with a circular knife which is partly covered by a hood around its circumference. In the cutting region, a guiding wall adjoins the circular knife and can be adjusted in a parallel fashion, when in the upright position, from a zero position in which its edge close to the knife is essentially aligned with the cutting edge of the circular knife, to permit adjustment of the cutting thickness transversely to the circular knife. In order to prevent, during wiping or brushing of the guiding wall in the zero position, pressure being exerted by the hand behind the cutting plane in such a way that the cutting edge of the circular knife can come into contact with the finger or the thumb, the guide wall is locked in the zero position to the hood of the circular knife.
